What are the Visa Requirements for Kenya

Like all other countries, Kenya issues out visas to its visitors and nationals. As of 1 January 2021, travellers are required to obtain an electronic visa prior to arrival in Kenya. No more visas are issued on arrival in Kenya, nor in Kenyan representations. This e-Visa allows entry into the country once for a tourist or business stay or up to 90 days or transit for up to 72 hours. All nationalities are eligible, except 43 who are visa exempt. The average time to obtain an e-Visa is 3 days. Children under 16 years of age are exempt from applying and will only need to present their identity papers.

The criteria for acquiring a Kenyan Visa

The e-visa being the only way to enter the country all nationalities require a visa to enter the country except a few countries that are exempted for 90 days. They include; South Africa (30 days), Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Burundi, Cyprus, Dominica, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Mauritius, Solomon Islands, Jamaica, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malaysia (30 days), Malawi, Maldives, Namibia, Nauru, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, San Marino, St. Vincent and the G, Saint Lucia, Samoa, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Sudan, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

For one to acquire a Kenyan e-visa, he or she must have a passport that is still valid at least 6 month after the date of entry into Kenya, you do not however need a resident visa. To acquire the Kenyan e-visa doesn’t necessarily mean one should be in Kenya at the moment with a valid visa or with an extension to your visa. The Kenyan e-visa is available for tourists, business and transit stays.

Important note:

For travel to Kenya the Kenya eVisa is mandatory. Your Kenya e-visa is eligible at all points of entry: Lokichoggio Airport, Wajir Airport, Eldoret International Airport, Kisumu International Airport, Nairobi Wilson Airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Garissa Airport, Lamu-Manda Airport, Malindi Airport and Mombasa Moi International Airport.

For a trip to Kenya you can get a single entry Kenya tourist or business e-visa or a Kenya transit e-visa.

Valid for a 90-day stay, it is best to apply for your Kenya eVisa three days before arrival. As of 1 January 2021, no visa on arrival will be issued.

[Please note: visitors who travel to Tanzania and/or Uganda from Kenya, and wish to re-enter Kenya a second time (without leaving the territory of the three countries), must apply for a single entry visa (tourist/business) which will enable re-entry without obtaining another entry visa]
