Amabere Gan Nyina Mwiru. Uganda’s Mysterious Caves Fort Portal

The Uganda’ s Amabere Caves are popularly known as “Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves”. Being nestled in Nyakasura, Fort Portal City in Western Uganda the caves are sometimes called the “Nyakasura Caves”. In addition to the alluring caves are part of the tourist sites to visit in Uganda, especially for travelers whose itinerary goes up to Kibale National Park popular for chimpanzee tracking experience.

The Mysterious Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves are located seven kilometers from Fort City Center and thirty kilometers from the iconic Kibale National Park.  Furthermore, this cultural site holds great symbolism for the surrounding people ‘‘Batooro people of Western Uganda’’ who find it to be a sacred place preserving their customs.

While on your long Uganda safari holiday tour, a visit to the Amabere caves can be combined with an adventure to Kibale National Park, the primate capital of the world. The Toro tales of the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves tell of a King from the Chwezi dynasty, Bukuku who amputated his daughter and cut off her breasts so that no man would admire her and make her conceive. It is from this legend that the name of the place comes from. The word Amabere means breasts in the local language.

However, the belief of the locals is contrary to the research as many researchers have studied the features in the area and found out that the Amabere are stalactites and stalagmites resulting from the chemical processes of nature that might have happened so many years ago. The features here are scenic and worthy of exploring on your Uganda adventure safari Tour.

Again within the surrounding area are other enormous attractions like the footprint believed to have belonged to the Bachwezi small gods, the Nyakasura waterfalls beautiful the area.  All these can be seen when you do your safari in Uganda. Uncover Uganda’s untold secrets on your safari, explore the mysterious caves, and enrich your trip with unique experiences.

The caves are a few kilometers from the legendary “Mountains of the Moon” in a place called Nyakasura in Fort Portal. Nyakasura holds great Scottish history as there is a school that was founded in colonial times to hold Scottish values and up to date the boys wear skirt-like shorts.

The other nearby attractions to this area are the; Semliki National Park, Mt Rwenzori, and Kibale National Park all that you can visit on a single safari in this area. Historical Importance of Amabere Caves – The significance of the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru

Notably,  Amabere Cave hold part of the history of the Batooro people who live in the area of Fort Portal. Toro kingdom broke away from the Bunyoro-Kitara empire whose king is believed to have cut off the daughter’s breasts. Basically, the king was called Bukuku and his daughter Nyina Mwiru.  And the king’s daughter was admired by most men in the kingdom because of her beauty.

Nyina Mwiru is believed to have gone against her father’s order to get married to a man of her father’s choice. The amputation was the punishment that her father designed to make her less attractive to men in the Kingdom. In addition, the Batooro believe that the rocks at Amabere Caves represent the breasts of the young princess.

Again there is a liquid always squeezing out of the rocks at Amabere and the people believe that it symbolizes the milk from Nyina Mwiru’s breasts. The Toro traditions tell the story of Bukuku and the young princess. And still more fascinating is that , the local guides in the area tell the story and explain the unique features of the Amabere Caves. As if this is not enough, there exists another legend about the first ruler of the Bachwezi empire who was called Ndahura.
