Where is Masai Mara Located?
The Masai Mara is a large National Game Reserve in Norok, in the southwest of Kenya, the Reserve is contiguous with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. The Reserve was named in honor of the Maasai People, the ancestral people who inhabited the area and are believed to have migrated to the area from the Nile Basin. Masai Mara National Reserve comprises of 1,510 square kilometres with the vast endless plains that encounters short sweet grasses, which is a source of ample feeding for the plentiful herbivores within the region.
The Masai Mara National Reserve is part of the large Mara – Serengeti ecosystem that spans on 25,000 square Kilometers, located in the north most part of the section. The National Reserve is bordered by the Serengeti National Park in the south, Siria/Oloololo escarpment to the west, Masai Mara pastoral ranches in the north, east and west.
The Reserve ecosystem encompasses areas known as the Masai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Triangle, and several Masai Conservancies, including Koiyaki, Lemek, Ol Chorro Oirowua, Mara North, Olkinyei, Siana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Ol Derkesi, Kerinkani, Oloirien, and Kimintet.
Can I explore Masai Mara on a self-drive?
A self-drive Masai Mara is also possible and all great just as Serengeti. We advise out clients to hire tour guides in the parks, you can hire a guide at the gate and this is recommended, as the chances of getting lost and not having the best sightings are quite high. The road between Narok and Sekenani gate is now brand new tar all the way. If the traveler wants to continue from Sekenani gate into the Mara driving himself inside the reserve, it is advised to rent a car that is sturdier, higher, and with a 4wd.
To access Kericho in the other side if you are stationed near Sekenani gate, your best bet would be to return to Narok and continue toward Kericho from there. Another option would be to transit the park to the Oloololo gate and then continue on via Lemek. But this road can be extremely bad.
Can you Self Drive Masai Mara?
